Churches and Chapels in the Ammergau Alps

Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul in Oberammergau
Bildbeschreibung: Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul in Oberammergau

Center of the Village – Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul in Oberammergau

The original church of Oberammergau had a timber structure which was so damaged by the beginning of the 18th century that a complete rebuilding was necessary. The creation of the new building, in the rococo style, was supervised by Josef Schmuzer. His son Franz Xaver was the stucco plasterer. The ceiling and wall frescos were created by Matthäus Günther, who was born in 1705 on an isolated farm at the northern side of the ´High Peissenberg´.

Unobtrusive – Parish church of St. Georg in Bad Bayersoien

The parish church of Bad Bayersoien has been decorated sparingly, but impressively by stucco artists from Wessobrunn. The ceiling painting originates from fresco painter Franz Seraph Zwinck, who is probably the most famous painter of his craft.

Grateful – Rochus Chapel in Bad Kohlgrub

In 1633/1634 the Plague haunted Bad Kohlgrub. When the plague had passed over this small votive church was built at the plague cemetery.

Charming – Chapel Church in Unterammergau

This is the oldest church of the Ammergau Alps. Its tower is of Gothic design, the inside enchants with its filigree Rococo. It is consecrated to St. Leonhard. In his honour one of the most impressive traditional Leonardi processions in the whole Oberland is held in Unterammergau.

Artistically interesting – St. Nikolaus in Unterammergau

The parish church of Unterammergau was built in 1710 and also contains pictures by the fresco painter Franz Seraph Zwinck.

Clerical – St. Gertrudis Chapel in Graswang

It was built in 1694 as a branch of the Abbey of Ettal opposite the forester’s house in Dickelschwaig. The paintings were created by Jakob Zeiler in 1755.
All around – The Chapel Circular route A chapel circular route leads to the chapels and shrines, as well as to field crosses and monuments. Small buildings, maybe not mentioned in art guides, but interesting for that very reason. A chance here to experience genuine devoutness.
