Abbey of Ettal

Bildbeschreibung:

With its imposing Baroque Basilica and the Rococo Vestry the Abbey of Ettal has been well-known for a long time.

Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria fulfilled the vow which he made after his safe and sound return to Bavaria and founded in 1330 the Benedictine Abbey Ettal. Connected with this religious vow was also a practical purpose. For the creation of the abbey provided protection of the local route ways and brought about the development of the area and the creation of a Foundation for Knights and their wives.

The central building with a 12 sided ground plan is impressive particularly because of its projecting stucco decoration creation by Johann Babtist Zimmermann and Johann Georg Üblherr as well as the ceiling fresco that has a central theme the benediction sky and the major Saints of the Holy Trinity. The church was completed in 1370 after a construction period of 40 years.

In 1710 the Abbey was acted as academy for Knights and was one of the most important secondary schools of period in time.

In 1744 – after a serious fire and the destruction of both church and abbey – the abbey area has been redesigned by Enrico Zucalli (architect at court) and Josef Schmutzer of Wessobrunn in the form you can see to this very day.
The Rococo Vestry, stuccoed in 1725 by J. Zimmermann and painted in 1747 by J.J.Zeiller, is considered to be one of the most beautiful Rococo Vestries of southern Germany.

Today you can visit the Basilica, the Rococo Vestry, the Distillery of the Abbey as well as the Brewery Museum within a guided group tour (with at least 15 persons) – included is a liqueur tasting on reservation.
