By train:

  • Travelling from Munich
    Every hour with the regional railway, direction Mittenwald / Innsbruck, as far as Murnau, there is a connection to the regional train to Oberammergau.
    Duration of ride: 1 h 50 mins
  • Travelling from Innsbruck
    Every hour from 11.00 am to 05.00 pm (otherwise every two hours) by regional express in the direction of Munich as far as Murnau, there is a connection to the regional train to Oberammergau.
    Duration of ride: about 2 h 50 mins

Regional train Murnau-Oberammergau:
The Ammer Valley Railway, built in 1900, which branches off the Munich to Innsbruck line at Murnau, takes you to our destination. This railway track is considered by many to be the most beautiful in Germany, and for good reason: it winds its leisurely way through quiet villages and lush meadows, passes beside unspoilt moors and again and again opens up views of the mountain skyline of “Werdenfelser Land”.

 

 

By car:

  • From Munich:
    A 95 in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen as far as Oberau, then on the B 23 in the direction of Augsburg as far as Ettal, Oberammergau, Unterammergau, Saulgrub/Altenau/Wurmansau, Bad Kohlgrub, Bad Bayersoien.
    Distance 91 km; duration about 65 mins
  • From Augsburg:
    B 17 Augsburg – Schongau; then at Peiting onto the B 23 in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Bad Bayersoien, Bad Kohlgrub, Saulgrub/Altenau/Wurmansau, Unterammergau, Oberammergau, Ettal.
    Distance 98 km; duration about 100 mins
  • From Innsbruck:
    A 12 direction Bregenz; Exit N 177 Zirl-Ost in the direction of Scharnitz; from the border B 2 in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen / Munich as far as Oberau, then on the B 23 in the direction of Augsburg to Ettal, Oberammergau, Unterammergau, Saulgrub/Altenau/Wurmansau, Bad Kohlgrub, Bad Bayersoien.
    Distance 76 km; duration about 75 mins
  • From Ulm:
    Via the A 7 Ulm-Memmingen as far as Kempten, on the B 12 to Marktoberdorf, continue on the B 472 to Schongau, then the
    B 23.
    Distance 177 km; duration 150 mins

 

By bus of the romantic avenue:

From May until October there will be a daily bus that stops in Oberammergau and Ettal. This goes from Frankfurt via Munich to Fuessen and return, the journey is known as the ‘Romantische Strasse’ (Romantic Avenue) because it takes the traveler through such beautiful and romantic scenery.


 

By plane:

  • Innsbruck: then by car take the B 11 to Mittenwald, B 2 via Garmisch and Oberau to Ettal; or by train to Murnau (continuation of the journey see above)
  • Augsburg: then by car or train (see above)
  • München: then by car or train (see above)

 

Local Mobility

The all parts of the Ammergau Alps are easily reachable by public transport. Those places, which are not close to the railway, are connected by bus.
In Bad Kohlgrub there is a local bus that connects the upper and the lower parts of the Spa!
