A game of death and life, promised at a time when the threat of death was close – this is the beginning for the story of Passion Play of Oberammergau in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years` War, after lasting suffering and dying by pestilence for month, the population of Oberammergau was vowed to perform every ten years the “game of suffering, dying and revival of our lord Jesus Christ”. On Pentecost 1634 for the first time they fulfilled the promise on a stage, which was pitched at the cemetery – directly above the fresh graves of the victims of plague. Have an experience, that generations have felt before you, when they entered the stage of the Passion Play Theatre for the first time.
