The nature park in the Zugspitze region!

The Ammergau Alps Nature Park captivates visitors with its unique combination of cultural and natural experiences. The Ammer Mountains, at approximately 29.000 hectares, are the largest nature reserve in Bavaria. Designated a nature park in 2017, the region is committed to sustainable and responsible tourism. The Ammergau Alps are ideally situated for discovering a multitude of Upper Bavarian attractions. These include Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze, Lake Eibsee near Grainau, the Partnach Gorge, and the Höllental Gorge. The Wieskirche pilgrimage church, Neuschwanstein Castle, the artists' village of Murnau, and the Glentleiten Open-Air Museum are all within a 40-minute drive. Even the state capital, Munich, is only 80 km away. This central location of the Ammergau Alps Nature Park invites you to an extended stay in our region. 

The Oberammergau Passion Play traditionally takes place every 10 years. In 2020, the production was postponed by two years to 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now the Passion Play is returning to its regular schedule and will next be performed in 2030. Christian Stückl will again direct. Preparations are already underway. Ticket sales are expected to begin in 2028.

Yes, there is a guest card. Firstly, there's the electronic guest card, which grants discounts on certain services, and secondly, the so-called KönigsCard. This card allows you to use a wide range of services free of charge. The KönigsCard is only available from participating hosts and cannot be purchased. 

With both the KönigsCard and the electronic guest card, you can use public transport (bus and train) free of charge in MVV zones 5-12. Ideal if you want to leave your car behind during your holiday.

By train: Via Munich and Murnau, the railway in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park serves the towns of Bad Kohlgrub, Saulgrub, Altenau, Unterammergau and Oberammergau. 

By car: Take the A95 to Oberau and then the Ettaler Berg pass into the region. Alternatively, from the northwest via the B23. Arrival via Plansee near Reutte (Austria) is also possible.
