The Ammergau Alps lie in southern Bavaria between Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen and are part of the Bavarian Alps. The region encompasses the towns of Oberammergau , Ettal , Unterammergau , Bad Kohlgrub , Bad Bayersoien , and Saulgrub . It also forms the Ammergau Alps Nature Park , covering 227 km² and ranging in altitude from approximately 700 to 2.185 meters, one of Bavaria's most diverse nature parks with a landscape of mountains, moors, forests, rivers, and lakes.

The Ammergau Alps are known for the world-famous Passion Play Theatre in Oberammergau , Ettal Abbey with its baroque basilica, and Linderhof Palace , the only completed castle of King Ludwig II.

Hiking trails , mountain tours, cycling routes and cross-country ski tracks open up the region in every season. Here, nature experiences combine with Bavarian culture, traditional crafts and regional cuisine.

Due to its location near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Zugspitze region, the Pfaffenwinkel, the Blue Land, and the Allgäu, the Ammergau Alps are an ideal starting point for excursions in Upper Bavaria . At the same time, the region offers tranquil nature experiences away from the major tourist centers and is suitable for active holidays, relaxation, family vacations, and cultural trips.

The nature park rangers and other experts will give you the answers and, on top of that, you will learn a lot more interesting facts on the guided hike through the Ammergau Alps Nature Park. From September 11th to 13th, 2026, the track in Unterammergau will once again become the meeting place for the international roller luge elite. At the ISSU European Championships, around 100 lugers from eight nations will compete in exciting singles, doubles, and team events. Young athletes will also be participating in the Ammergau Alpine Cup. Look forward to fast-paced races, a diverse supporting program, and excellent catering in the finish area.

On October 03, 2026, the sportingWOMEN Trail Day will take place for the first time in the region, becoming a meeting point for women who love running. At this special event, participants will discover the most beautiful trails in the area together in a diverse program of guided trail runs, valuable tips from experienced guides, and the opportunity to test products from our partners. Look forward to inspiring encounters, shared experiences in nature, and a great atmosphere within the group. Whether you want to gain your first trail running experience or share your passion for off-road running with the community – the focus is on exercise, exchange, and unforgettable moments on the trails.

 

They are as varied as they are diverse. Concerts, guided hikes, carriage rides and much more leave nothing to be desired.

The Ammergau Alps Nature Park captivates visitors with its unique combination of cultural and natural experiences. The Ammer Mountains, encompassing approximately 29.000 hectares, are Bavaria's largest nature reserve. Designated a nature park in 2017, the region is committed to sustainable and responsible tourism. With Ettal Abbey , the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Linderhof Palace , and the renowned woodcarving village of Oberammergau , featuring the Passion Play Theatre and Lüftlmalerei ( traditional Bavarian fresco paintings) , the region boasts a wealth of top-tier cultural highlights. In Bad Bayersoien and Bad Kohlgrub, the thick, slushy mountain pine peat bog has been used for decades as a therapeutic remedy.

The Ammergau Alps are ideally situated for discovering a multitude of Upper Bavarian attractions. These include Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze, Lake Eibsee near Grainau, the Partnach Gorge, and the Höllental Gorge. The Wieskirche pilgrimage church, Neuschwanstein Castle, the artists' village of Murnau, and the Glentleiten Open-Air Museum are all within a 40-minute drive. Even the state capital, Munich, is only 80 km away. This central location of the Ammergau Alps Nature Park invites you to an extended stay in our region. 

The Oberammergau Passion Play traditionally takes place every 10 years. In 2020, the production was postponed by two years to 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now the Passion Play is returning to its regular schedule and will next be performed in 2030. Christian Stückl will again direct. Preparations are already underway. Ticket sales are expected to begin in 2028.

Yes, there is a guest card. Firstly, there's the electronic guest card, which grants discounts on certain services, and secondly, the so-called KönigsCard. This card allows you to use a wide range of services free of charge. The KönigsCard is only available from participating hosts and cannot be purchased. 

With both the KönigsCard and the electronic guest card, you can use public transport (bus and train) free of charge in MVV zones 5-12. Ideal if you want to leave your car behind during your holiday.

By train: Via Munich and Murnau, the railway in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park serves the towns of Bad Kohlgrub, Saulgrub, Altenau, Unterammergau and Oberammergau. 

By car: Take the A95 to Oberau and then the Ettaler Berg pass into the region. Alternatively, from the northwest via the B23. Arrival via Plansee near Reutte (Austria) is also possible.
