Passion and Passion Play
The Oberammergau Passion Play is based on a vow that was given in times of great distress, which is fulfilled continuously every 10 years on the open-round stage of the theater building. For over 350 years the Oberammergau are to redeem their promise with commitment and pride, to perform the play of suffering and death of Christ.
42nd Passion Play 2020

In 1632 the pestilence, a plague, had infested Oberammergau and by 1633 nearly every family had come to experience death. People, brought down with the pestilence, vowed to perform every ten years at the towns cemetery, a Passion play depiction the suffering and dying of Christ if there would be no more deaths by the pestilence.
