Description

The Abbey of Rottenbuch used to be an Augustinian Canon Abbey. The church itself was built shortly after the founding of the abbey.

Although the stucco mason Josef Schmutzer from Wessobrunn drastically altered the church, the original layout of a basilica still remains. The medieval concepts of space were retained to good effect. The construction of a crossing transept and an exposed tower are highly unusual for Bavaria. The interior frescoes are outstanding examples of the work of Matthäus Günther. The overabundant stucco work seems to overshadow all other architectural concepts as the ideas of Bavarian church rococo have been realized to their full effect.
