Geotope
Whetstones were mined in the old quarries near Unterammergau for over 5 centuries.

During the Grinding mill gorge you can discover the remains of dilapidated grinding mills. Those mills of the whetstone makers that brought a lot of wealth to the place. Where numerous grinding mills were once in operation, today the processing of stones from the nearby quarry into whetstones is shown again.

The geotopeAmmergau whetstone quarries" is one of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria. The basis for the whetstones are the mostly very thin, silica-rich layers in the Ammergau layers, the so-called whetstone limestones. In order to get to these valuable layers, large amounts of unusable rock first had to be broken, which can still be seen today at the mining sites and dumps.

Already the way there, which goes through the wildly romantic Schleilfmühlklamm is worth a trip. Starting from Pürschling parking lot we go to the entrance to the gorge. The path leads through the Schleifmühllaine to the old quarries. A true-to-original one Bruchhütte and historic railway tracks provide an insight into the dangerous work of the whetstone makers.

You reach one via a junction viewing platform with a spectacular view over the Pulvermoos in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park.
