This unique long distance cycle tour through the picture book surroundings of the Bavarian Alpine foothills
begins at the Ammer sources in the Graswang Valley, one of the most beautiful mountain valleys in the Bavarian Alps
The route goes past the Passion Play Theatre in Oberammergau and slowly leaves the Alps as it continues along the Ammer and crosses the picturesque landscape of the Pfaffenwinkel region, home to numerous cultural monuments. To the North of Weilheim, the route continues past Lake Ammersee and now wends its way alongside the River Amper.
Numerous sights and attractive river landscapes are on display on the last section past the towns of Fürstenfeldbruck, Dachau and Freising before the Amper flows into the Isar in Moosburg.
The advantage of travelling in this direction is that the route runs downstream alongside both rivers and thus makes things easier for cyclists by always providing a slight descent. Completing the route in the other direction is also very worthwhile, because your destination – the mountains on the horizon – are always in sight.
The section from Moosburg an der Isar via Lake Ammersee to the Ammer sources to the South of Oberammergau is about 200 kilometres long and can be comfortably completed in 3 to 4 day stages if you wish to visit some of the attractive villages, towns and sights along the way. You can travel by train to the starting point in Oberammergau. There are also numerous other entry or exit points that can be reached by rail or via other public means of transport.
