Description
A tour up onto the Ettaler Manndl and down via the Soila Lake to Oberammergau is a must for every serious hiker visiting the Bavarian Alps. The starting point of the tour at Ettal Abbey and the views from the Ettaler Manndl over to the Zugspitze formation form a harmonious ensemble of natural spectacles and cultural monuments that is rare, even in the Germany Alpine Region.
The forest road ends and becomes a narrow hiking pathway. Pass the Tiefen Valley Forest Hut and continue to ascend the mountain round a series of sharp bends until you reach the access point for your final ascent below the mighty rocks of the face of the Ettaler Manndl.
Over the first few metres of the climb, test whether you feel secure enough to make your way up to the summit (a proper set of via ferrata climbing equipment is recommended). Use the fixed wire ropes to climb up into a small wind gap, then follow a ledge up to the left and through the rock face before completing a final direct climb up onto the summit area, the Ettaler Weibl. The summit cross is only a few steps away via a wind gap and a gully. Although the supporting link chain is firmly attached, it is not suitable for securing yourself.
Once you have safely descended to the main road, turn left to head for the Soila Alm. You will firstly reach the Solia Lake, an idyllic corrie loch. From here, it is only a few minutes to the Soila Alm, where refreshments are available in summer if the weather is good. After a short rest, proceed down into the valley to Oberammergau, passing the valley station of the Laber Mountain Railway.
Go through the village and exit via the Enzian Trail heading for Ettal. The route winds its way along the main road, gently climbing to your starting point in Ettal.
