Stage Ammergau Alps
From Trauchgau to Altenau the ride takes you along the Königsstrasse (King's Road), named for King Ludwig II, through the valley of the Halbammer. You will pass by the Altenau peat bog, ride through Saulgrub and Bad Kohlgrub before ultimately leaving the Ammergau Alps in the direction of the Murnau peat bog.
Alternate Route via Oberammergau
If you would like to take advantage of the proximity of such cultural treasures as Oberammergau, famous for its wood carvings, the Ettal Monastery, and King Ludwig's II castle Linderhof, we warmly suggest an alternate route. From Altenau continue on the Ammer-Amper Cycleway in the direction of Oberammergau and on to Ettal.
A magnificent baroque monastery awaits you here as well as the Open Cheese Dairy Ettal with its hearty traditional Bavarian tea break the ingredients of which are entirely supplied by local farmers. You then continue through the Graswang valley to Castle Linderhof. Participate in the castle tour and you will learn why King Ludwig II fell in love with this secluded valley.
After backtracking for just a tiny bit, you will turn right into the Elmau valley towards the 'Rotmoos . Follow the signs for the Plansee circuit until the end of the valley. Now turn right towards Griesen. The small detour to the picturesque Plansee with its clear water is well worth the effort! Return through Griesen and continue on via Grainau to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Cycle through the Loisach valley with the villages Farchant and Oberau to reach Eschenlohe. In Eschenlohe you will rejoin the Lake Constance-Königssee Cycleway.
