The most beautiful valley hikes in spring in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park

Spring in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park is a true paradise for hikers. When the mountains and valleys awaken from their winter slumber, the region reveals its most beautiful side. Rolling hills, babbling streams, and a calming atmosphere make hikes here particularly pleasant.

A highlight for spring tours is the Pulvermoos nature reserve. The region is known for its beautiful nature; in spring, the moss is transformed into a blooming landscape. In spring, a carpet of flowers sprouts in the Pulvermoos nature reserve, becoming more and more colorful with each passing week: the pink primrose, the rich yellow globeflower, and the blue gentian show off their most beautiful side. Here you can also admire the Siberian irises, which are in full bloom from May to June and are a magnificent sight with their bright purple blossoms. Another highlight is the so-called Streu-Drischln (strawberry hay stacks). This is a special type of meadow cultivation. A Streu-Drischl is a haystack that tapers conically from bottom to top and has a wooden pole stuck in the middle. This is a traditional way of storing hay. The mown, straw-like vegetation, known as Streu, was not fed to the animals, unlike meadow hay, but used as bedding. Since there wasn't enough storage space at the stable, the bedding was stored in a Drischl (drying shed) in such a way that it remained dry even over the winter. Today, this manual labor is no longer profitable. The historical method of hay-drischl farming has been revived here to preserve the ancient craft.

Altherrenweg and Romanshöhe:

An easy hike with a 220-meter elevation gain and a distance of 11,5 kilometers. The hike leads exclusively along wide, comfortable paths with only moderate inclines. Shortly before the Romanshöhe mountain inn, a steeper climb must be tackled. The Altherrenweg trail near Oberammergau is a more leisurely hiking trail. Located in the heart of the Ammergau Alps Nature Park, the loop follows consistently easy paths through a mostly open, cultivated landscape. Apart from short forest sections, you never lose sight of the mountains, which are considerably more gentle than the Zugspitze massif further south. Further information about the route

HAIKU Way:

On the hike between Bad Bayersoien and Bad Kohlgrub through the Geizenmoos, 17 wooden steles with short lyrical texts: haikus, stand along the path. This form of poetry originated in Japan.

Haikus are short poems in the form of three lines, each containing 5 + 7 + 5 syllables. These seventeen syllables are intended to capture an observation, a flash of inspiration. Nature plays a major role in this. These short texts don't lecture readers; they are encouraged to develop their own thoughts. The new themed trail leads 7,8 kilometers from Soier Lake through Geizenmoos to Bad Kohlgrub. Along the way, the steles invite you to pause for a moment. Further information about the route
