King Ludwig II loved Oberammergau and the people of Oberammergau love him. Each year on the eve of the birthday, August 24th, blaze on the mountain peaks of the Ammergau Alps Ludwigfeuer and on the striking Local mountainKofel is a burning royal crown built.
Dedicated men are busy weeks and months in advance, carrying heavy logs of firewood for a huge cross up Oberammergau's local mountain.
On the evening of August 24th, they also erect a huge burning royal crown on the summit. At nightfall (around 21.00 p.m.), brass players from Oberammergau open this festival with the chorale "The Heavens Praise" fiery remembrance of Ludwig II.
Then the fires are lit on the Kofel and on the surrounding mountains, atmospheric and visible from far away.
