Sustainability in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park

Would you like to make your vacation as sustainable as possible? This is possible in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park!

The region offers you many offers and opportunities to pay attention to the environment even on vacation. On this page you will find suggestions for accommodation, activities, means of transport and much more that will help you protect the environment while on holiday.

Stay sustainably: Nature Park Hosts

Companies that are particularly committed to climate-friendly and sustainable holidays are certified as nature park hosts. All accommodations are located close to nature and support regional products and services. The hosts are checked based on a defined catalog of criteria and then awarded.

Traveling sustainably: mobility offers

With the guest card, which you receive directly from your host, you can use public transport in the region free of charge. This means you can be environmentally conscious even on holiday. Or you can use one of the electric cars from the Ammer Loisach Energie car sharing project “e-Alois” or rent an e-bike.

Shop & eat locally

Cheese, game meat, liqueur, bread and carving - these are all products that are produced in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park. Regional products result in fewer emissions for transport and it tastes much better when you know the products come from the region. Regional products are also perfect as holiday souvenirs.

Sustainable activities: ranger tours

The regular ranger tours are the perfect activity for young and old. On the free tours you go on a stroll through the nature park with a ranger and learn exciting facts about the region, nature reserves, plants and animals.

What are we doing as a holiday region for sustainability?

The Ammergau Alps have been designated as a nature park since 2017. The Ammergau Alps Nature Park e. V. takes care of all issues relating to nature conservation and landscape management, education for sustainable development, sustainable regional development as well as recreation and sustainable tourism.

As a destination management organization, Ammergauer Alpen GmbH works in close and daily exchange with Naturpark e. V. together. This is possible because the boundaries of the nature park coincide with those of the Ammergauer Alpen GmbH's area of responsibility. We also work next door to each other in our offices, which enables quick and regular exchanges and joint work on projects.

The coordination with the Naturpark eV is also reflected in our tour planner, in which all protected and protected areas can be viewed and visitors can be guided thereby.

We therefore encounter the topic of sustainability in our daily work!

Further information about the Ammergauer Alpen Nature Park e. V. can be found on the nature park's website. There you can find out how the nature park is committed to sustainability and nature conservation. You will also find information on how you can get actively involved, e.g. B. in the volunteer projects of the Ammertal team.

In addition to developing and participating in sustainable offers such as the e-car sharing project or the nature park hosts, there are also other projects that we dedicate to the topic of sustainability.

The best example is our clean up event “Valley Green Up” which will be held in 2021 together with our partners, König Ludwig Lauf e. V. and the Ziener company. The event has taken place every year since then and is very popular with locals, day visitors and holiday guests. In 2023, around 120 participants traveled throughout the Ammergau Alps Nature Park to clear hiking trails and nature of garbage and rubbish.

We have also been recognized for several sustainable projects:

In our summer holiday program “Junior Ranger on a Discovery Tour”, children explore the Ammergau Alps Nature Park in a playful way during the summer holidays and learn a lot about the local flora and fauna and find out what everyone can do to protect them. In 2023, this program received the award as a lighthouse in sustainable German tourism as part of the “Katzensprung 2.0” project.

The region also received first place in the “Sustainable Customer Journey” category at the fairwärts Award in 2020 and also the Destination Nature Award in the same year.
