More regional products in the nature park

From bee honey to sheep wool to personal care products - these products come from the Ammergau Alps.

Oven-fresh delicacies

Whether cheese sticks with beer cheese or quark bread with quark from the Ettal show dairy - the local bakers refine their products with regional specialties. These are bread and pastries that are only available from real bakers.

Carnal pleasures

Butcher Christian Gerold is a central figure in the 'Regional Marketing' initiative. He and his colleagues in the Ammergau Alps supply restaurants with local meat products from pasture-raised beef and pasture-raised lamb. During the season, for example, Christian Gerold goes into the forest himself and picks wild garlic for the whole year, up to 250 kg! Cyclists can have him make a snack package for the tour, for example with wild garlic pesto on the bread and in the meat loaf.

Everything from sheep

Socks made from homemade sheep's wool, blankets and cuddly toys - and all directly from the producer - you can still find these, e.g. at Herbert Köpf in Oberammergau or Gabi Pest in Graswang.

Skins and meat from brown and black mountain sheep, a breed threatened with extinction, are available from the Wilhelm sheep farm in Altenau (organic farm, www.bio-berglamm.de)

Regional game

Local game from the Oberammergau forestry operation of the Bavarian State Forests is available at the Oberammergau forestry operation's sales point at Ettaler Str. 3. From May to January, red deer, roe deer and chamois are sold fresh there as whole pieces, cut up or ready to cook. Opening hours: Thursday: 14 p.m. - 18 p.m., Friday: 10 a.m. - 14 p.m.; Pre-orders from Oberammergau Forestry Company Tel. 08822 9218-0

Herbs grow

The so-called meadow hay is mown at over 900 meters. The meadows are subject to strict guidelines: They may not be fertilized, only cultivated by hand and mown a maximum of twice a year. The meadows owe their diversity of species to this special care - arnica, orchid, carnation, cat's paw, cinquefoil. To ensure that thistles and nettles do not destroy biodiversity, they must be mowed. The meadow hay obtained in this way is the basis for hay baths and the tasty Ammergau hay liqueur.

Honey licks

The flowers in the Wiesheu are the Eldorado of the busy bees in the Ammergau Alps. The honey is correspondingly aromatic and is considered a real highlight by connoisseurs. The honey can, for example, be bought directly from the beekeeper or from the show dairy in Ettal.
