The action at the Oberammergau Passion Play

The passion play begins with Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem, pursues the Passion story, shows the last supper, leads over to crucifixion and finds his Climax in the resurrectionThe piece consists of 12 sections. At the beginning of each section, a choir performs a "tableau vivant" in which actors reenact scenes from the Bible. These scenes are contemplative interpretations, supported by music and song from the orchestra and choir, and establish connections to the Old Testament.

The drama depicts the final moments in Jesus' life, but it emphasizes the entire Gospel, particularly Jesus' teachings and his view of humanity. At its heart is his message of radical repentance and his compassion for every individual. He preached in Rome-dominated Israel, a time of great social inequality, oppression, and exploitation. Any form of resistance was swiftly suppressed by Pilate. The people longed for liberation from Rome and awaited the Messiah. It was during this time that Jesus stressed the necessity of universal love and radical transformation, abandoning hatred and violence.

The play emphasizes Jesus' strong connection to his Jewish roots. As a devout Jew, he addressed the priests. He recited the Shema Yisrael, which states: "Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one!" and criticized the priests who focused more on religious rituals than on justice, mercy, and faith.
