Around 120.000 years ago, during the Young Moraine Period, the bunting sought its way north after leaving the Alps.
A magnificent Ammer Gorge was formed between Altenau and Peißenberg. Here, about 15 km from the source, the river created this impressive rock breakthrough, the Scheibum.
The Scheibum consists of marl and sandstone. The various rock layers that were formed during the Alpine folding around 25-30 million years ago can be clearly seen here as natural limestone, clay, white and gray quartz and slate.
It is 600 m long, up to 60 m deep and has been protected since 1953.
The Scheibum is also part of the meditation path and is considered a place of peace and strength where you can unwind and at the same time experience nature at its most beautiful. Here, silvery rock walls meet turquoise-green water, a place to pause, listen to nature and sharpen your own perception.
The source of the Ammer is in the Graswangtal. It drains part of the Ammer Mountains, flows into the Ammersee north of Weilheim and flows into the Isar as Amper near Moosburg. The Ammer valley is one of the most beautiful natural river valleys in the northern Limestone Alps.
