Historical/Archaeological Sites
Various weapon finds at Döttenbichl bear witness to the times of the Celts and Romans.

From the time when the Romans were under Emperor Augustus in 15 BC BC The Alps and their northern foothills were occupied militarily, a large part of which comes from over 700 metal finds, which were excavated at the so-called Döttenbichl under the Kofel near Oberammergau between 1992 and 1997.

These are finds that... two different cultures can be attributed.

On the one hand, there were Celtic brooches, iron keys and tools, mostly of an agricultural nature. You like as Offering a small place of burnt offerings can be seen, which was on the Döttenbichl. The sacrificial site indicates that the Ammertal was settled long before it was conquered by the Romans.

On the other side are coins, three daggers (one was found in 1901), over 300 arrowheads and shoe nails Roman soldiers. Three catapult arrowheads found there bear the stamp of the 19th Legion, which was devastatingly defeated in the Battle of Varus in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD and never raised again.

This legion had probably already taken part in the Alpine campaign in Ammertal local Celts in battles involved, what the many used Roman weaponsClues.

In the following centuries the area remained Part of the Roman province of Rhaetia with their Capital today's augsburg.
