In the immediate vicinity of Linderhof Castle is the St. Anna Chapel, the oldest building in the castle park. With its inauguration in 1684, it is almost 200 years older than the castle itself. The chapel, dedicated to the Mother of Mary, was built by the Ettal Monastery. The altar painting depicting the Holy Family dates from the time it was built.
But King Ludwig II didn't leave the chapel completely untouched: the stained glass windows show King Ludwig IX. of France and King Richard of England, the namesake of the fairytale king and his great idol Richard Wagner.
The neo-Gothic blue starry sky in the chapel also comes from Ludwig II.
