St. Nicholas Church

Churches/chapels
1000 years ago there was a stone church at the site of today's parish church in Unterammergau. The current church was built in the early 18th century and was dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of travelers and merchants. The presumed reason for the choice of this patronage is Unterammergau's location on Rottstrasse.

The furnishings mainly come from the Baroque and Rococo styles. The frescoes in the nave are by Johann Jakob Würmseer from Oberammergau and show the life of Saint Nicholas. The high altar shows Mary's Assumption into Heaven, the left side altar shows St. Nicholas of Myra, the right shows Jesus' Descent from the Cross.

The three frescoes by the Oberammergau artist Franz Seraph Zwink on the lower gallery are remarkable.

Unterammergau is part of the Oberammergau parish association.
