Ammergau Alps Nature Park - vacation in Saulgrub, Altenau and Wurmansau

Saulgrub, Altenau and Wurmansau are only a few kilometers apart. All three towns are located in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park and belong to the municipality of Saulgrub as independent towns.

A look back

The historical significance of the area around Saulgrub dates back to Roman times, when the Romans developed a road network during the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. The Roman roads covered 80.000 to 100.000 kilometers. One of the most important was the Via Claudia, which connected southern Germany with northern Italy, namely Augsburg with Verona. Parts of this Roman road can still be seen in Saulgrub today. Another contemporary witness is the Kammerl power plant, an industrial monument that was built in 1898/99 and is the world's oldest railway power plant for single-phase alternating current. Today it is open to visitors, and the support association for the historic railway hydroelectric power station Kammerl eV offers guided tours twice a month.

Vacation in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park: Accommodation in Wurmansau, Altenau and Saulgrub

Saulgrub, Altenau and Wurmansau are embedded in the forest and meadow-rich foothills of the Alps between the 1548 meter high Hörnle in the east and the 1396 meter high peak of the Hochschergen in the west. The valley is crossed by the Ammer with its natural and original river course. It is probably one of the last wild rivers in Germany. Thanks to the well-developed network of paths, Saulgrub, Altenau and Wurmansau are the ideal starting point for long hikes and bike tours. Accommodation here is available in different price categories, from guest houses to cozy holiday apartments. Hikers are thrilled by the emerald green water of the Ammer on a circular hike from Altenau. The accommodations offer Bavarian cosiness, tradition and modernity. The same applies to Wurmansau. The accommodations here also guarantee a relaxing holiday and the best rest.

Events in the nature park

are as varied as they are diverse. Top-class performances on the Passion Theater stage, traditional evenings, guided hikes, carriage rides and much more leave nothing to be desired.

A village becomes a host

It has been over ten years since the former “Zur Post” inn in Altenau closed its doors. Since then, there has been no longer an inn in the village center of the town of 600 people. Until now...

In the spring of 2013, the citizens of Altenau seized the problem and pulled out all the stops to revive the inn with a newly founded cooperative.

Bayerischer Rundfunk found the campaign very exciting and reported on the project "A village becomes a host".

Since August 2014, Altenau has had its own economy again. The “Altenauer Dorfwirt” inn invites you to stop by and overnight stays have been possible here since then.
