Challenging mountain tour from Ettal via Ochsensitz and Zieglspitz to the Notkarspitze (1889 m) and steep descent to the Ettaler Mühle restaurant.

It starts right before Benedictine monastery in Ettal or at the Ettaler Sattel hiking car park.

After his safe return home Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian the monastery in 1330 in this enchanting scenic location. Centuries later also admired King Ludwig II. the special location of the place and built only a few kilometers away Linderhof Palace in the Graswangtal.

After just a short climb to the... Ox seat you can understand the motives of the royal peasants even better. Breathtaking views of the Ammergau Alpswhich Ester Mountains and Wetterstein accompany you on your way along the Grades over the Zieglspitz to the destination - the Notkarspitze. It is only briefly referred to as “Not” by the locals:

From here it goes down into a cirque and over a path on steep serpentines into the valley. Once you've reached the bottom, it's worth stopping off Ettal mill. After a refreshing drink and Bavarian delicacies, you will be back at the starting point in 20 minutes.

Directions

From the Parking lot at Ettal Monastery Walk down the main street past the Klosterhotel Ludwig der Bayer and turn into the first street to the right, the Notalmweg.


In a southerly direction you hike across a short stretch of meadow towards the mountain forest. This is where it begins Climb up on the Ox seat, from where many bends lead steeply uphill through the forest. The tour now always starts from the Ochsensitz along the ridge about the Zieglspitz to the Notkarspitze. The entire route offers fantastic views of the Karwendel, Wetterstein and the Ammergau Alps.


The descent from the Notkarspitze takes place in a northerly direction down to the Großkaralm, over steep switchbacks The path in the mountain soon leads down into the valley. Once at the bottom, the path runs along the edge of the forest back to Ettal to the starting point.

Author's tip

After the tour it is worth taking a detour to Ettal show dairy. Be sure to try the fire cheese or beer cheese here, which is made from local milk.
