Directions
The route from Oberammergau to neighboring Unterammergau is ideal for “warm hiking” before stopping at the hiking car park at Pürschling goes into the grinding mill gorge. Past some waterfalls meet the former workplaces of the whetstone makers grinding mills. With the exception of one, which was extensively restored, these unfortunately only exist as remnants of the wall. After the grinding mills, continue through the gorge until you reach the forest road. Now turn right towards Pürschlingshaus.
After the Joseph's Chapel, decorated with Lüftl paintings, turn left onto the mountain path towards Kolbensattel. On the path you always have great views towards Hörnle, Aufacker and the foothills of the Alps. After crossing the mountain forest, another dream view of the Laber and Oberammergau opens up at the Kolbensattelhütte. Head down into the valley on a comfortable hiking trail or with the Alpine Coaster.
Anyone who set off directly from Unterammergau can now either walk from Oberammergau back to Unterammergau (approx. 45 minutes) or take the DB/RVO bus (even free with the electronic guest card).
By the way: whetstones served until the last century for sharpening knives, scissors and scythes etc. The people of Unterammergau mined these stones here in the mountains and refined them with the help of water power in the grinding mills to produce whetstones, which were shipped all over Europe.
Our advice:
Never get lost again - We recommend the free “Zugspitz Region” app with, among other things, GPX tracks for all tours in the region
