This unique long-distance cycle path through the picture book setting of the Bavarian foothills of the Alps begins at the Ammerquelle in the Graswangtal oberammergau, one of the most beautiful high valleys in the Bavarian Alps.

Past the Passion play location Oberammergau The path along the Ammer slowly leaves the Alps and crosses them picturesque hilly landscape of the Pfaffenwinkel with his numerous cultural monuments.

North of Weilheim, past the Ammersee, the cycle path now winds along the Amper. Numerous sights and beautiful river landscapes await the cyclist on the last section past the cities Fürstenfeldbruck, Dachau and Freisingbefore the amps come in Moosburg flows into the Isar.

The advantage of this direction of travel is that... Path in flow direction of the two rivers and therefore always one pleasant gradient makes cycling easier. In the opposite direction, the path is also very worthwhile because you reach the goal, the mountains on the horizon, always in view.

The route from Moosburg an der Isar over the Ammersee to the Ammerquelle south of Oberammergau is Approx. 200 km long and comfortable in 3-4 daily stages manageable if you also want to visit the beautiful towns and sights. 

To start with you can Train to Oberammergau be driven. Other entry/exit points along the trail can also be reached by train or other public transportation.

Directions

The Ammer-Amper cycle path runs along the rivers bunting and Amper through the Bavarian foothills of the Alps.


Depending on the direction of travel, the Ammer-Amper cycle path presents itself as a leisurely river tour, which promises comfortable cycling down the mountain at the beginning or has moderate climbs towards the end. We present the tour here from the Ammerquelle. In the opposite direction, the route is also very worthwhile because you always have the destination, the mountains on the horizon, in sight. There are also numerous possible entry and exit points that can be easily reached by train or other public transport.


Bunting springs


Start, kilometer 0 The Ammer springs are located in the Ettaler Weidmoos nature reserve between Oberammergau and Ettal. From there, follow the cycle path that runs along the Ammer river bank. After about 3 km you will reach Oberammergau. Pass the cemetery and the sports grounds and drive straight into Oberammergau city center.

At kilometer 4 you reach the world-famous Passion Theater. The Passion Play takes place on the open-air stage every 10 years. In the intervening years, the stage hosts plays, concerts, operas and other top-class performances.
Oberammergau is also ideal for hiking and mountain tours in the Ammergau Alps, the largest nature reserve in Bavaria.

Peissenberg


Kilometer 47 Following in the footsteps of the mining tradition in Pfaffenwinkel, the mining museum, which is well worth seeing, awaits you in the heart of the market town. www.peissenberg.de


Weilheim in OB


Km 62 Weilheim is attracting, so treat yourself to a stay in the attractive pedestrian zone in the heart of the medieval district town! www.weilheim.de  The historic district town is the center of the Pfaffenwinkel and a popular shopping town with an inviting pedestrian zone. The city museum in the old town hall shows the city and art history.


Diessen am Ammersee


Km 79 The historic market town of Dießen has been characterized by an artists' colony since the Middle Ages - based on its tradition, it is considered a focal point for contemporary art. The monastery parish church “Mariä Himmelfahrt”, which has been elevated to the status of Marienmünster, is one of the greatest baroque churches in southern Germany. www.diessen.de


Fürstenfeldbruck


Km 115 The idyllic town on the Amper invites you to browse through small, owner-managed shops and enjoy culinary delights. Representative town houses, the Amper and lots of greenery characterize the cityscape. www.fuerstenfeldbruck.de  


Dachau


Km 137 Widely known as the location of the concentration camp memorial, Dachau also offers a very worth seeing old town with the Wittelsbach summer residence Dachau Castle and a unique panoramic view of Munich. The Dachau Picture Gallery shows works from the artist colony period. A visit to the district museum and the Neue Galerie are also recommended. www.dachau.de/tourismus


Moosburg on the Isar


Finish, kilometer 202 At the intersection of the Ammer-Amper cycle path and the Isar cycle path, the old town of Moosburg rises with the two landmarks of the city that can be seen from afar, the church towers of St. Kastulus and St. Johannes. Charming alleys and historic town houses characterize the cityscape. www.moosburg.de


 


Links to other long-distance cycle routes


The Ammer-Amper cycle path offers various connections to other routes: for example in Moosburg with the Isar cycle path or near Eching am Ammersee with the Ammersee cycle path to Munich. In Altenau there is a connection to the Bodensee-Königssee cycle path. In Oberammergau there are options to continue cycling to Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Reutte in Tyrol to the Via Claudia-Augusta. In Peting you will find a connection to the Romantic Road cycle path towards Füssen or Landsberg am Lech. You can switch to the Munich-Augsburg cycle path in Fürstenfeldbruck.
