In the summer of 1858, the Bavarian King Maximilian II traveled from Lindau to Berchtesgaden in five weeks. As an alpine variant, the Maximiliansweg follows this royal journey along the northern edge of the Alps and thus offers a magnificent cross-section of the Bavarian Alps between Lake Constance and Königsee.

Directions
The total over 350 km long long-distance hiking trail touches the Ammergau Alps between the Tegelberg above Hohenschwangau and the village of Grafenaschau at the foot of the Hörnle in four stages.
Part of this great high-altitude hike, which can be planned as a one- or two-day version depending on your mood, mood and ability, is presented here. If you want to reach Linderhof Castle on the same day, we recommend taking the chairlift from Bad Kohlgrub to the Hörnlehütte.
If you have more time, you can do everything on foot. Optionally, you can hike the wonderful trail from here High-altitude circular route with view on Lakes in the foothills of the Alps to the Hinterer Hörnle and thus bring you the first summit luck of the tour.
Back at the Hörnlehütte you can fortify yourself with a snack. From here you walk part of the meditation path downhill to Unterammergau. Shortly before the town you come to the Kappel pilgrimage church past, the oldest church in the Ammertal.
The comfortable climb to the village begins on the opposite edge of town towards Steckenberg August Schuster House on Pürschling (It is currently not possible to stay overnight here). With hut food Zugspitze view Recharge your batteries for the final chord along the path up to the Große Klammspitze and down to another stop at the Brunnenkopfhäuser Linderhof Castle.
If you have two days to spare and alpine hiking experience, you can spend the night in the August-Schuster-Haus, climb the Teufelstättkopf the next day, then balance along the ridge to the Brunnenkopfhäuser and, with a little climbing skill, climb the Große Klammspitze before also heading for Linderhof Castle.
