Gravel biking with a view of the Zugspitze - Between Lech and Murnauer Moos (Schongau-Murnau)

The tour starts in Schongau. After leaving the old town through the beautiful Frauentor, you first go down a ramp and then immediately go up a hill again on the cycle path that leads out of Schongau. The route then runs through a varied mix of forests, fields and small villages. The landscape always offers new variations with cows, sheep, different types of grain and vegetables as well as meadows and woodland.

You follow the Lech and reach two dams. Behind the second dam is a large lake, which is a popular destination for summer activities. From here, after a detour to Steingaden, a section of the route begins that is characterized by small hills with varied views and interesting curves.

The elevation profile of the tour looks impressive, but it's not that bad, as the elevation gain is evenly distributed over many small hills that are gradually overcome. The route continues on the famous Königssträßle, which King Ludwig had built so that he could travel quickly between his castles. The path is well laid out and you can ride quickly over the gravel to Altenau.

From Altenau, the route continues to climb up to Bad Kohlgrub, where beautiful views can be enjoyed again and again. The route then leads rapidly down on gravel paths through the forest to the Murnauer Moos - a highlight of the tour. Caution is advised here due to the large number of people. The Murnauer Moos impresses with its diversity, with flat moss areas, overgrown moorland landscapes and a clear view of the Alps.

The tour is the second stage of a three-day short stage tour from Weilheim via Schongau and Murnau back to Weilheim.

Consideration makes paths wide

Please note that in our region you often cycle on agricultural paths. You are very welcome on these paths, but of course these paths are also used by farmers with their vehicles to cultivate the areas. Due to the width of the vehicles, the paths can sometimes get narrow. The paths remain wide enough if all users show consideration for each other and, if necessary, move out of the way and make room for other users. Please note that it is often not possible for large machines to get off the paths. As cyclists, please move out of the way when things get tight!

Use of river paths

We are pleased that the Weilheim Water Management Office has created dike paths along the rivers, which can also be used by cyclists.

Please note that these paths were created for water management purposes and do not always meet the quality requirements for cycle paths. The paths may be damaged or have impassable sections, particularly after construction work, flood events and storms (falling trees). Furthermore, construction site traffic is occasionally to be expected.

Please use the paths with appropriate caution and pay attention to the local traffic signs! Use of the entertainment channels is at your own risk.
