Directions
In the park behind the tourist information Take the path that leads past the music pavilion on the left and turns right behind the Kneipp facility.
Leave the spa park again to the left over an iron bridge and follow the Mythenpfad slightly uphill to the right. You continue to follow the path and go slightly downwards into the Ludwigsschlucht. You climb up steps and bridges, past numerous waterfalls and leave the gorge again via stairs. Once at the top, continue on the dirt path to the right and at the second intersection turn left up to the parking lot for the lift at Tannenbankerl. Behind a wooden hut at the top right, after crossing the ski slope, a footpath takes you up to the Sonnen district. From there turn left and then continue towards Kraggeau.
Immediately at the first agricultural property, the hiking trail leads to the left and soon climbs slightly until you reach a hill again and a beautiful view of the land in front of you Unterammergau's local mountains Pürschling and Teufelstättkopf to have.
We head back downhill on a path through a small forest. You will come to a wider asphalt road, which you continue along to the left. You are back on the old Roman road arrived and follow it a short distance to the next town Wurmsau.
You cross the town straight ahead, pass the former Ammertaler Hof inn and leave the village on the so-called Wiesmahdweg. The path now meanders south parallel to the main road. At an intersection there is a sign pointing left to the Hörnlehütte, but you continue straight on. After a curve to the right, cross a wide wooden bridge and immediately turn left onto a path. There is a stream flowing towards you on the left side.
You will come to a crossroads, turn right here and continue on Kappelkirche.
From the portal of the little ones Kappel pilgrimage church from you orient yourself to the right. At the small stele, follow the Wiesmahdweg in a southeasterly direction. You will pass an information board where the peaks of the Ammer Mountains will be explained to you.
At the next fork in the road, turn left, leave Wiesmahdweg after approx. 600 m and take the asphalt path that climbs to the left. This initially meanders uphill and always offers you wonderful views of the valley and the Pulvermoos nature reserve.
At the point where a sign points left towards Stieralm, walk a few more steps and follow the forest path that also leads to the left along the Gschwandgraben.
Your path continues uphill and you will soon reach the shepherd's hut through a clearing. From here there is a short climb to the left up to the summit of the Middle Hörnles.
Once at the summit, enjoy the unique all-round view.
From the Hörnle hut, go back the way you came from Unterammergau. However, you do not climb the Mittleres Hörnle, but rather stay on the path to the left below the summit. The path then leads slightly downhill and shortly afterwards uphill again towards Hinteres Hörnle. At the next junction, keep right and follow the path to the Stierkopf at approximately the same height.
After circling the Stierkopf, you now hike slightly downhill again across alpine meadows to the edge of the forest. At the end of this descent you will reach the Drei Marken crossroads. Follow the Oberammergau signpost via Romanshöhe. At the next fork, keep right and pass a log cabin to the left of the path. At the next two junctions, go straight on towards Romanshöhe.
You will now come to a clearing on the right of the path and then immediately have to hike very steeply down the valley through a ravine. Once you have reached the bottom you will find yourself on the Altherrenweg, which you follow to the left to the Romanshöhe excursion restaurant.
You now continue downhill on an asphalt path. Before a bridge, leave the path and take a path to the right that runs next to a stream. When you reach the next asphalt road, turn left, go over the bridge and continue into the town of Oberammergau. From Warbergstrasse, take the second street to the right into Furch and come to Theaterstrasse. Follow this again to the right and you will soon be in front of the Passion Theater building.
This stage is only accessible in summer!
In winter, follow the Wiesmahdweg and at Romanshöhe you will return to the signposted meditation path to the next stop, "Passionstheater". This alternative is of course also possible in summer for anyone who would like to avoid the climb to the Hörnle.
