Theme trail: Romans - Rhaetians - Puzzle Trail

Extensive excavations in the 1990s on the Döttenbichl hill near Oberammergau unearthed astonishing finds: Roman weapons and everyday Raetian objects were found together in rock crevices. Further research revealed that a military conflict between the Romans and the local Raetians must have taken place in the immediate vicinity of the Döttenbichl during their Alpine campaign. The Döttenbichl itself was likely a Raetian sanctuary. The Roman and Raetian Trail explains, in a way suitable for children, who the Raetians were and what the Döttenbichl meant to them. It also explains what the finds from the Döttenbichl have allowed us to learn about the Roman Alpine campaign. 

The "Roman-Raetian Riddle Trail" connects this archaeological site with the riddle trail. This trail leads along rock faces adorned with petroglyphs of varying ages. There are even carvings dating back to the Raetian period, more than 2000 years ago, though these are no longer visible to the naked eye. Nevertheless, drawings from past centuries demonstrate that the rocks at the foot of the Kofel have retained their fascination since prehistoric times. Symbols of prohibition, votive drawings, and other inscriptions suggest that people have repeatedly come here for various reasons. The riddle trail explores what might have motivated people to create these drawings and what a possible contemporary equivalent might be. 

The themed trail signs are located on the Döttenbichl and on the Grottenweg between the Döttenbichl and the Kofelauweg parking lot.
