On the way you will pass some signs Information about whetstone making. The highlight is, in addition to the numerous waterfalls credentials for restored whetstone mill at the beginning of the gorge.
Making whetstones is a tradition in Unterammergau. There are still various places to be found everywhere in the Unterammergau area Quarries, where stone has been mined for centuries. Until the 1960s, the last whetstone maker in Unterammergau – Schneiderla Toni – earned his living with this. Then he had to give up his craft. The mill slowly fell into disrepair until the "Historical Working Group" painstakingly restored the mill in the Schleifmühlklamm gorge with at least 3000 hours of work over the course of 3 years in order to put it back into operation.
Even today, the committed Unterammergauers proudly show interested visitors how whetstones are made. That's how you can every second Saturday of the month from May to September look over the shoulders of Georg Simon and Martin Hohenleitner, who are now volunteer whetstone makers, at work and join a tour of the whetstone mill.
