The Laber Trail takes you high above Oberammergau. On the Laberei's viewing terrace, with its view of the Zugspitze, it's quite pleasant to linger....

The trail leads past Lake Soila and up to the Laberhaus. From there, it continues past the Ettaler Manndl and down into the valley to Ettal. Following the Panorama Trail and the Voglherdweg, you'll return to the starting point at Oberammergau train station along the Ammer River.

Directions

From Oberammergau train station, the trail initially follows the Ammer River briefly to the Passion Play Theatre. Passing the Protestant church, you then walk along the so-called "Große Laine" stream, beginning a gentle uphill climb. Passing Wellenberg, turn right before the Laber cable car and cross the bridge. From here, the actual ascent begins. Go through the turnstile and continue on a narrower path until you reach a forest road. Follow this road for a while, then continue past the so-called Bärenbad (Bear's Bath) towards Soilasee lake. From Soilasee, it's about 250 meters of elevation gain to the summit. On the descent, you'll pass the foot of the Ettaler Manndl mountain and then descend to Ettal. The path into the valley is quite steep in places. Once at the bottom, the Panorama Trail and then the Vogelherdweg (Bird Herd Trail) will lead you back towards Oberammergau. A visit to the Ettal Basilica is highly recommended. There's also a pleasant café in the monastery courtyard, as well as other dining options in the village. At the end of Vogelherdweg, cross the main road and you will soon reach the Ammer river. Follow this downstream back to the starting point at the train station.
