Trail running - Königstrail (Kofel, Pürschling, Brunnenkopf)

The King's Trail starts at the train station in Oberammergau. From here, the route leads – initially along the Ammer River – up to the Crucifixion Group. Via the Grotto Trail, you reach the foot of the Kofel mountain. The first steep ascent begins. The path winds upwards through wooded terrain and becomes increasingly alpine in the upper section. At the top, the route to the summit of the Kofel is partially secured with ropes. 

After reaching the summit, the descent from the Kofel begins. Upon reaching the Kofel saddle, the route continues towards the Kolben area. The paths now become somewhat wider and easier to walk. A varied forest trail leads to the Kolbensattel hut, which is ideal for a short break or refreshments.

Refreshed, the next section begins with a longer, steady climb towards Pürschling. The trails here are easily runnable, but lead steadily uphill and require good pacing. As the altitude increases, the landscape opens up.

The heart of the Königstrail begins at Pürschling: the spectacular section leading to Brunnenkopf. The trail runs partly narrow along the ridge, offering impressive views and a continuous panorama. This section is technically demanding and requires not only sure-footedness but also, in some places, a head for heights.

From Teufelstättkopf, the route continues along the ridge towards Brunnenkopf. The path alternates between narrow trails and alpine paths.

The descent into the valley finally begins at the Brunnenkopf. The downhill section is easily runnable on a wide path. 

The King's Trail ends at the famous Linderhof Palace. Here, the tour concludes in a truly regal setting. From Linderhof, there is a bus connection back to Oberammergau. Those who haven't had enough can hike back to Oberammergau via the forest path through Kohlbach and along the Sonnenweg trail from Graswang. 

Incidentally, you can shorten the trail by starting in Unterammergau instead of Oberammergau and walking through the Schleifmühlklamm directly over the Teufelstättkopf (saving: approx. 5 km of distance).
