Many paths lead to Rome. And more and more people not only want to make a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, but also to old pilgrimage routesn get to the eternal city. Similar to the Way of St. James, the path from northern Germany to Rome was forgotten for many centuries. But for a few years now it has been possible to walk on this old pilgrimage path again.
The Via Romea some Abbot Albert of Stade is not to be confused with the Via Francigena, currently the most famous pilgrimage route to the Eternal City. It runs pretty much vertically from Stade near Hamburg over to the south Braunschweig, Bad Langensalza, Würzburg, Augsburg, Oberammergau to Austria and the Burner and only meets it on the last section west of Viterbo Via Francigena, which continues to Rome.
On the section from Rottenbuch to Ettal, the route encounters the Alps for the first time and takes you past numerous small churches, the Passion Theater in Oberammergau and ends at the legendary Ettal Monastery.

You can take the bus back to Rottenbuch. You have to change at the Echelsbacherbrücke to the bus to Rottenbuch (line 9822)
