Directions
The “Ammergauer Wiesmahdweg” runs in a slightly elevated position above the wide high valley of the Ammer. Magnificent views of the mountain peaks opposite on the Sonnenberg are guaranteed.
The start is at the “WellenBerg” adventure pool in Oberammergau. Anyone who does the hike with one refreshing bath wants to decide, moves in the opposite direction.
At the beginning the hike follows the “Alherrenweg”, up and down through meadows and along the edge of the forest to the panoramic area Berggasthof Romanshöhe.
From here you continue below the Grünbichel towards Unterammergau. After about 2 km turn right towards Hörnle.
Be careful, shortly afterwards you should not miss the turnoff into a forest path on the left! This leads a part along the “Engen Laine” and crosses the stream ditch that runs down from the Hörnle over a bridge. Keeping to the left, you continue the tour on the paved “Schaffer-Seppl-Rundweg”.
Around 300 meters later, after a crossroads, you turn sharply right and climb a short climb to Kappel pilgrimage church up. The little church is a good one Space to breathe and magnificent view.
After the “Kappel” is Wurmsau the next target. The Wiesmahdweg briefly leads through flowering meadows, then on a comfortable gravel road into the idyllic Saulgruber district .
The History of the village with 200 inhabitants extends into the Roman period back. A route of the “Via Claudia” led from Tyrol through the Ammertal towards Augsburg. Via this “Old Roman Road” you will soon reach the Aura Hotel, a recognized sanatorium for the blind and visually impaired. Here you turn right and walk across the gentian meadow and past the votive beech to Kraggenau.
About the hamlets Sonnen you reach the valley station Hörnle suspension railway in Bad Kohlgrub. From here you can decide whether you want to take the train back to Oberammergau (free for overnight guests in the nature park). The extension of the Wiesmahdweg from Bad Kohlgrub to Grafenaschau via Schönau is also highly recommended. Here you can hike along the beautifully decorated Wiesmahdstadl .
