The Winter Balloon Days will take place in Bad Kohlgrub from December 27, 2025 to January 04, 2026.
Weather permitting, around 30 colorful balloons launch into the bright blue winter sky every day. They usually launch from Bad Kohlgrub (Sonnen district, near Hörnlebahn).
The balloons glide over the Ammergau Alps Nature Park at New Year's Eve, offering visitors views of the local mountains Hörnle, Kolben, and Laber, and, depending on visibility, much further afield. Participants traditionally receive a balloonist baptism ceremony on their first balloon flight, complete with a certificate of nobility and a unique title.
The balloon glow offers another highlight during this time:
- on 28 December 2025 from 17.00 p.m. in the courtyard of Ettal Monastery
- on 30 December 2025 at the “Night of 1000 Lights“ from 16.00 pm in the spa gardens of Bad Kohlgrub
Within the "Night of 1000 Lights" There are drinks, food, music and candles spread throughout the town.
Balloon rides only take place in good weather.
