The House of Pontius Pilate, located in the heart of Oberammergau, is the centre of arts and crafts.
the House is decorated with numerous fresco paintings, created in 1784 by the famous fresco painter Franz Seraph Zwinck. The garden front of the house is painted with the denunciation of Jesus by Pontius Pilate. From this famous scene the house owes it´s name from.
In 1981 the house should have been toren down to create space for a parking lot. Thanks to the help of radio, television and the monument protection Annelies Buchwieser and her team were able to save the house of Pontius Pilate. Thank goodness!
The living workstudio in the ground floor gives every visitor the opportunity to look at different kinds of craftsmen and talk to them about their work. Already hundreds of years ago the so called “Kraxntrager” established on their travels through whole Europe such carvings, pottery, “jumping jacks”, behind glass paintings and a lot more. The entrance of the living workstudio is free of charge.
In the handcraft-shop, next to the living workstudio, all the artwork created by the members of the living workstudio are exhibited and offered for sale.
The first floor of the house of Pontius Pilate displays one of the world biggest collections of behind glass paintings. This exhibition can also be visited in combination with the OberammergauMuseum.
