How do you become a folk hero? By living a decent and righteous life? Or is it more the fascination with the forbidden and disobedience to the authorities?  

The case of Matthias Klostermayr suggests the second possibility: the “Boarische Hiasl” and his gang roamed through what is now Swabia. In the eternal dispute over hunting rights, he took the side of the common people. Due to the laws of the time, this had no way of protecting the laboriously cultivated fields against wild animals. The fact that he shared his loot with people probably gave him more sympathy points. 

Having become a hero, the fame soon went to the young man's head. The gang's actions became increasingly wild and aggressive and the population's support began to dwindle. And so the drama unfolds.

Despite the Boandlkramer's attempts to cover it up, this hoax was eventually noticed "up there" and trouble in paradise was inevitable.
