Churches/chapels

Baroque gem in the village center of Bad Kohlgrub, interior mostly rococo.

It is not known exactly when the parish church of St. Martin was built. What is certain is that Provost Ulrich III. had the church built during his service from 1339 to 1350. In 1356 the provost promised “the community and community of Kollgrueb a weekly Holy Mass there, as well as on the various church holidays.”

Major structural changes were made to the church in the first half of the 17th century. The round choir end was built in the Renaissance style with four high arched windows. In 1622 the church was completely re-roofed with shingles, in 1635 a new confessional was built into the wall behind the high altar, in 1636 the church was whitewashed, the windows were straightened and a new clock was purchased.

In 1709 two new bells were cast in addition to the peace bell that had already been purchased in 1565.

After the Thirty Years' War, especially after the plague, there was a significant increase in the population; the church became too small and was therefore enlarged from 30 to 1727.

The nave with sacristy and vestibule was added to the choir, which was built in the 19th century. Josef Dirt from Wessobrunn was the master builder and plasterer.

The tower is on the northeast side, the lower part is medieval and had a pointed roof that only slightly towered over the church, so the tower was raised between 1750 and 1755.

When it comes to interior design, three stylistic periods can be distinguished.

  • The pulpit body with staircase is late Baroque (1680 - 1700).
  • The large Stations of the Cross with the carved frames, the large high altarpiece, the two tabernacles on the side altars and these themselves, as well as the figures Gregory and Augustine on the southern side altar and St. Joseph and Joachim on the northern side altar, come from the early Rococo.
  • The third style period is the classicist rococo (1780 - 1790). The magnificent high altar in its structure and tabernacle, the sound cover of the pulpit, the cheeks of the pews, the upper top of the baptismal font and the parapet of the upper gallery date from this time.

A work of art of the finest kind depicts the painful mother under the larger-than-life crucifix around 1750 - 1760.

The church is 27 m long and 11,50 m wide and is a beautifully proportioned baroque building on the outside, to which the finely structured tower with the extremely sweeping lantern gives it a very unique character.
