The Curatiekirche in Altenau is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. It is still relatively young, as for a long time the people of Altenau had to go to church services in Unterammergau, to which Altenau was ecclesiastically subordinate. It wasn't until the 1850s that, after a long struggle, Altenau got its own church.
St. Antonius is simply furnished, in keeping with the classicist spirit of the time. The high altar picture shows St. Anthony with the child Jesus, the side altars show the pain of Mary: on the left side altar Mary mourns her husband Joseph, on the right side altar there is a Pietà, i.e. a depiction of Mary with her son taken from the cross.
