King Ludwig II - the "Fairy Tale King"

An eternal mystery

The myth was formed during the king's lifetime. “I want to remain an eternal mystery to myself and others,” Ludwig once wrote to his teacher, and this mystery still fascinates people today.

The poet Paul Verlaine called Ludwig II the "only true king of this century." The shy dreamer, the antithesis of a citizen king, is still present today as "the Kini" and is worshiped as an idol.

His castles, which no stranger should ever enter, have been visited by more than 130 million people since the death of Ludwig II. They are stone witnesses to the ideal alternative world that the king built for himself, turning away from the present.

Ludwig II ultimately failed in his attempt at self-realization in the historical, the poetic and the ideal. He probably preferred death to returning to reality.

The King's Life

Ludwig was born on August 25, 1845 at half past twelve in Nymphenburg Palace near Munich as the eldest son of Crown Prince Maximilian. He was baptized Otto Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig.

Crown Prince

After the abdication of King Ludwig I, Ludwig's father becomes King Maximilian II of Bavaria and the three-year-old Ludwig becomes Crown Prince.

Accession to the throne

King Maximilian II died after a short illness on March 10, 1864. On the same day, Ludwig was proclaimed King Ludwig II of Bavaria at the age of 18. Due to the unexpected death of his father, Ludwig came to the throne completely unprepared. From the very beginning, Ludwig was committed to promoting culture, in particular he supported the composer Richard Wagner.

First big decision

Ludwig wanted to remain neutral in the looming war between Prussia and Austria for leadership in Germany and to keep his country out of the direct fighting. However, under pressure from Austria, he signed the mobilization order. Ludwig withdrew from public life for the first time to Berg Castle on Lake Starnberg.

engagement

Ludwig became engaged to Duchess Sophie Charlotte of Bavaria, who was two years younger than him. She was a sister of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth. However, Ludwig kept postponing the wedding date and finally broke off the engagement in October.

Purchase of Linderhof and laying of the foundation stone of Neuschwanstein Castle

Ludwig bought the Linderhof in the Graswang Valley, which he had already known from his father's court hunts in his childhood. He also had the hunting lodges on the Brunnenkopf, Pürschling and Halbammer renovated. Ludwig did not come to the mountains for hunting, however, but rather out of love for nature and its beauty. In the same year, the foundation stone of Neuschwanstein Castle was laid.

Withdrawal from the public

After Bavaria's involvement in the Franco-Prussian War, the Kingdom of Bavaria joined the German Empire. This severely limited Ludwig's sovereignty as king. Ludwig then withdrew more and more from public life. The king preferred to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau in a private performance that year. He was so moved and shocked by the play that he donated the monumental crucifixion group to the people of Oberammergau.

Move to Linderhof Castle

Linderhof Palace was now completed, and Ludwig moved his actual main residence from the Munich residence here. He increasingly turned night into day and lived in a dream world. Nevertheless, Ludwig also carried out his official duties as king in the mountain huts.

Construction of Herrenchiemsee begins

Ludwig began construction of Herrenchiemsee Palace on the Herreninsel in Lake Chiemsee, which he had bought in 1873. However, like Neuschwanstein, the building was never completed.

Incapacitation & death

At the instigation of the government, Ludwig was declared incompetent on June 8, 1886. His uncle Luitpold took over the regency. On June 11, Ludwig was taken into custody at Neuschwanstein and taken to Berg Castle, where he died in Lake Starnberg on June 13 in a manner that remains unexplained to this day.
