The "Fairytale King" - An eternal mystery
The myth began to take shape even during the king's lifetime. "I want to remain an eternal enigma to myself and others," Ludwig once wrote to his governess, and this enigmatic quality continues to fascinate people today. The poet Paul Verlaine called Ludwig II "the only true king of this century." The reclusive dreamer, the antithesis of a citizen king, is still present today as "the King" and is revered as an idol.
His castles, which were never meant to be entered by strangers, have been visited by more than 130 million people since Ludwig II's death. They stand as stone witnesses to the ideal alternative world the king created for himself in retreat from the modern world. In the Graswang Valley in the Ammergau Alps, he had a special refuge built for himself: Linderhof Palace was the only one of his castles that was completed and inhabited during his lifetime.
In Oberammergau and Ettal, Ludwig II is still held in high esteem. Due to the king's special connection to this region, his birthday on August 25th is celebrated in a particularly memorable way.
