The numerous interesting museums in the Ammergau Alps are educational and endearing. There is a lot to discover here about the culture of Bavaria and especially that of the Ammergau Alps. From the history of the Passion Play to the art of carving to the Rottstraße trade route, which led through Ammergau.

Oberammergau Museum

The impressive wood carvings and religious works of art in this museum tell history and stories - carving art between tradition and modernity.

Annually changing special exhibitions are put together with great care and show parallels between Oberammergau and international art.

mSE art gallery & sculpture park

The mSE Kunsthalle and its sculpture park show impressive paintings of what was and could have been in the past 2000 years of European art history. A visit to the spectacular exhibition “KAIROS. “The right moment” can be combined with gourmet food in the Hieronymus restaurant on Weiherweg.

The “Living Workshop”

gives one to the visitor comprehensive insight into a folk art that can only be found in this region. The artists don't just let themselves be seen there Looking over your shoulder at work, rather also happy to answer questions about the very specific ones Techniques, woodwork or working methods.

Open from May to mid-October and during Advent and Christmas. At Dorfstrasse 20. Admission is free.

Passion Theater Oberammergau

The exhibition in the foyer of the Passion Theater highlights the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play. You will also get an insight behind the scenes of this historic house on exciting guided tours.

Village and Wetzstoa Museum Unterammergau

The village museum reflects the extensive history of Unterammergau. Special areas such as flax cultivation, weaving and the department for archaeological finds convey the life and attitude of the locals. It's also about the craft of whetstone making. An industry that helped the town achieve remarkable prosperity.

Museum in the Bierlinghaus

The Bierlings were a merchant family from Bavaria. They held the office of salt factor (an officially appointed manager of the salt dumps in which the salt transported on the Rottstrasse was stored) and were there for over four centuries which makes Family in town.

The museum in Bad Bayersoien reports on their lives and their hardships and shows how they lived.

Kammerl hydroelectric power station

You would never suspect that this inconspicuous hydroelectric power station in the Ammer Valley was the source of a small technical revolution. Around 120 years ago, the first low-frequency alternating current was generated here for electrified railway traffic. The power system that is still in use in Central and Northern Europe today. 

The "Förderverein Historisches Bahnwasserkraftwerk Kammerl eV" offers guided tours of the power station on two Sundays during the summer months. A must for every technology and railway fan.

Historic Wiesmahdstadl

In the Wiesmahdstadl on the Elmau-Wiesweg between Grafenaschau and Bad Kohlgrub (near Großenast) you can marvel at farming traditions and find out more about the Wiesmahd.
