St. Peter and Paul, the Catholic parish church of Oberammergau in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district
As a precursor, the Oberammergau church probably had a wooden structure. At the beginning of the 12th century it was converted into a Romanesque stone church. Since the previously Gothic church was very badly damaged, the Augustinian canons from the Rottenbuch area decided and planned a new building in 1732. A new building was built in 1736. Josef Schmuzer managed the new building of the rococo jewel, his son Franz Xaver was the plasterer. The ceilings and wall frescoes come from the great Matthäus Günther, born in 1705 on a deserted farm on the north-facing slope of the Hoher Peißenberg.

The building is an east-facing hall church with a narrower, almost square choir and a high, polygonal and dome-crowned tower on the upper floor as the west end. Inside, the corners of the wall are rounded into quarter circles. At the opening to the choir, these quarter circles continue upwards to form a concave triumphal arch. The choir is vaulted with a circular dome, the eastern part of the nave - the middle of the entire building - with an oval flat dome. Here, two side chapels are attached to the hall on both sides like short transept arms, which, in conjunction with the dome, give the room the aspect of a central building.

The central picture of the high altar (Matthew Günther) shows the Mother of God as the heavenly helper of those who ask her for intercession and contribute gifts. It is replaced by a figure of the risen Christ at Easter and during the Passion Play. Of the rich decor and figural decoration of the altar structure (Franz Xaver Schmädl), the statues of the apostles Peter and Paul as well as the outside of Saints Joseph and Joachim with their attributes are remarkable. Above the tabernacle, the Lamb of God sits enthroned on the book with seven seals.

The two side altars on the choir arch (Schmädl and workshop) are dedicated to the theme of redemption through Christ's sacrifice on the cross. In a rare representation, the left altar shows God's decision on salvation as an “inner conversation” of the Trinity. Saints Martin and Gregory the Wonderworker appear flanking them. The right altar shows Christ on the cross - this cross is considered to be the one in front of which the people of Oberammergau took their passion play vows in the plague year of 1633 - with Mary and John and, on the outside, the "good thief" Dismas and Mary Magdalene.

The altars in the side extensions (also by Schmädl) are dedicated to the Holy Family (left; altarpiece by Günther) and St. Anthony of Padua (right; picture by Johann Jakob Zeiller).
