Directions
From the starting point in Unterammergau we start this royal circular tour first heading north. In Scherenau we cross the Ammer and cycle upstream along the Ammer until we arrive in Oberammergau. It's worth taking a detour to the world-famous Passion Theater. While still in town we cross the Ammer once again and cycle through the Weidmoos nature reserve towards the Ammerquelle. We follow the cycling signs into the Graswangtal, first past the Gertrudiskapelle in Dickelschwaig and then through the town of Graswang. In town, briefly driving on the state road, we turn right onto Kohlbachweg and continue cycling past a small pond through the Kohlbachtal slightly uphill to the castle park. Once we arrive at the north gate, we first have to push our bikes through the wonderful castle park until we reach the castle and the grounds of the fairytale king Ludwig II.
The way back to Graswang is on the other side of the valley. From Graswang we follow the same cycle path towards Ettal, past the Gertrudis Chapel. In the Weidmoos nature reserve at the bridge we turn right and reach the Ettaler mill. From there we can see the world-famous Ettal Monastery. From Ettal we follow the cycling signs back to Oberammergau. This cycle path runs parallel to the B23 and shortly afterwards we follow the Ammer to Oberammergau. To get to the starting point in Unterammergau, we cross the Ammer in Oberammergau and leave the town heading west. The cycle path to Unterammergau again runs parallel to the B23.
